Fun with the knitting machine

I ordered me some superthin grey yarn from ebay to feed my knitting machine with, but just grey ...wel that is grey. So I dropped 2 cones into a dyebath and let them soak there for a fair long time, they are not through and through deep red but still I consider it a success.

The grey and red combine real nice, and there is a jumper on the way here. I saw after having gone quite a while already that there is an oopsie in the flower design so obviously this one will be mine. After knitting I will drop the cones back in the redy dye and let it soak up some more. Then make an other jumper but for my store this time :-)

First layer of paint is on.

First come one layer of vertical planks with space inbetween and then the next to form a solid layer. The first layer needs painting before the next layer goes on as the wood shrinks and you would see the white groundlayer otherwise in the cracks.

Fortunately the sun is out again so painting is a nice job :-)

Very little progress

I have not made all that many new sqares...the big ones are way more fun than the small ones. But I did make a bag for the yarn balls so I can easily bring it along here and there :-D

Falcon catching

Thousands of years ago hunting by means of falcons was already utilised, these days a skill only few still posess. For this type of hunting falcons were needed and they had to be caught of course.  Around the 1600s in European courts falconry had it's heydey and several years worth of salary could be had for just a single highly trained bird. Not strange to think then that adventerous types would traipse far and wide in search of birds to catch. Close to where we live they have reconstructed just such a site, standing there it is hard to imagine what a hard life it must have been, no roads led there, no shops,no cars. Everything hauled in on horseback through rough wilderness for the summer months of falcon catching. Now in the middle of June we had a biting wind and snowflurries blowing around our windproof jackets....

Incredible to find delicate flowers growing in such harsh conditions!

Stormy weather

It is blowing like crazy with gusts of rain thrown in, which is a great excuse not to be painting the planks of the first layer of the outer skin of the barn...but it shoulkd be done none the less. So I am ordering me some sun :-D

Seastars for children

A few days ago a friend pointed me to the direction of a felter I have admired for a long time, she was making seastars for children who have cancer. Here is the story.

Rugut Fund has been supporting children with cancer diseases for five years by now. This year we will invite the children to the fifth annual meeting of "Island of Friends". "Island of Friends" - is a day full of wonders when children's most secret wishes come true, and daily life within hospital walls and painful procedures are simply forgotten.

It is a day when children with cancer can stop thinking about their disease and enjoy their childhood, while their parents get connected to other families with the same fate, share information and experience.

When we speak about the disease in the foundation, we use a story we have created, that the ill children are Captains who are leading their ship through the ocean during the period of the illness. Throughout the journey anything can occur - calm days, gales, unfavorable wind, sea sickness... Once a year all Captains sail back to the "Island of Friends". Thus, the event "Island of Friends" has always been dominated by the marine motives. More information about the "Island of Friends" can be found on the website of the foundation.

This year, we will invite the little Captains to lead their small boats to the island on the first weekend of July. It has become common that during each "Island of Friends" day children receive a trophy, which will be a reminder of Friends Island during the difficult journey throughout the disease. This year the little fighters will receive is a small starfish, so that during the treatment they will be accompanied by boundless hope, faith and success.

It could be made of felt - a soft material, which a child can cuddle or hold in the hands when hopes weaken.
Dear colleagues and fans of felting, if you can and would like to felt a starfish for the captains, join this campaign. All felted starfishes will be posted here and given to the children in July during the "Island of Friends" event. Specifications of the star - a three-dimensional star-like object from 17 cm to 20 cm.

Email me at inga@surf.lt
or send stars:
Inga Samusiene
Paliesio kaimas, Sidabriniu pastas
Moletu rajonas LT33046
Lithuania

So I made a few and will sending them off, please do join and give these children a day to remember :-)

My magical spring bunny

About twice a year in the EuropeanStreetTeam on Etsy we play a swap game. Previous years Art matched us all up in a circle swap after filling out a questionnaire and this year for the first time Vadjudka took the honneurs. She did a very excellent job of it too! I sent my gift to Mitsy and from Maria I received the magical Jimmy the Fis. As soon as he arrived he went exploring. He basked a little in the sun, sniffed the cherry blossoms and took the little goat for a ride. He is very pleased to have landed here :-D
